Cortisol is a hormone that is released during stressful situations to provide the body with energy. Cortisol constricts blood vessels and increases our blood pressure for oxygen to be delivered to our muscles. This stress response is beneficial for the short term, but long-term stress and cortisol release can have detrimental effects. Continual release of cortisol can lead to damaged blood vessels and plaque build-up which can ultimately lead to hypertension or other heart related problems.
High levels of cortisol in the body for long periods of time can lead to Cushing’s syndrome. Cushing’s syndrome is recognized with high cortisol levels causing obesity, high blood pressure, and a fat lump between the shoulder blades.
Deep breathing reduces stress which will reduce cortisol levels. The reduced cortisol lowers blood pressure and can reduce the symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome.
