Ischemia is a problem that arises when blood flow to any part of the body is inadequate, also meaning a lack of oxygen to those parts. Ischemia can be caused by a blockage of arteries by ant means including a blood clot, where there is a sudden and sever stoppage of blood flow. Some of the severe problems it can lead to are heart attacks and strokes. One of the big causes of ischemia is atherosclerosis. This refers to plaque that builds up in the arteries. This build up happens over time. Once there is too much builds up, the effects can be immediate. This plaque hardens over time, narrowing the arteries which slows the flow of blood. Although symptoms are not always there, some symptoms experienced may be: chest pain, shortness of breath during exercise, slurred speech and problems moving the body. Serious effects of ischemia include heart attacks and stroke.
